Brian was a dear friend for 40 years and had a huge influence on my understanding of weightlifting and applied strength and conditioning in the other sports I've had the honour of coaching. He was also a true friend to my partner Phil and I. His knowledge base was huge and I'll be forever grateful for the generosity of spirit he displayed in seeking to apply this knowledge to areas of which he didn't have direct experience. He knew a lot but he wanted to know more, and that is just one of the rare qualities he possessed. Despite his many achievements in weightlifting, both as a world class Masters competitor and a coach he was also a great coach of coaches. I'll forever treasure the work he Cyril, Chris and I did on exploring ways coach education could be brought in line with modern thinking and practice. It takes a really humble and strong character to ask 'How can we do this better?' It's difficult to express how much I'll miss Brian. Always questioning, always challenging (sometimes cantankerous) but a truly good man and wonderful friend. I loved Brian and I'll miss him so much.
